Aims and Purpose
- To continue the merit rating plan embodied in the Follmer Bronze Award and to provide an incentive for continuing contribution to the chapter.
- To reward HFMA members who go the "second mile" in serving their chapters.
Scoring Details
- The award became effective June 1, 1967.
- Retroactive scoring is permissible in all categories in the point system if appropriate documentation is presented.
- The individual scoring record for the Reeves Award will be initiated by the national office and forwarded to the chapter secretary. The form will show:
- The number of points (in excess of points needed to qualify for the Follmer Bronze Award) that the individual has earned toward the Reeves Silver Award.
- The year in which additional points for the Reeves Silver Award can begin to be recorded.
- One hundred (100) points are needed to qualify for the award. Thus, a member must earn a total of 200 points* to receive the award.
- Records for each chapter member are maintained by the chapter for the current year. Previous years' records are maintained by the national office.
- Computer-generated forms are forwarded by the national office to the chapter secretary before May 31 each year for insertion of points earned by individual members during the previous year. The completed forms are returnable to the national office before July 31, signed by the chapter secretary and verified by the chapter president's signature.
- Computer-generated printouts of accumulated points earned by individual members are forwarded to the chapter before November 30. The chapter secretary will inform individual members of point status via the best means available.
- The national office, when recording current year's points will identify members, who qualify for the award and will immediately order the inscribed plaque. The chapter presidents will be notified by letter of the names of recipients.
- No credit for any term of chapter service of less than one-half of the chapter fiscal year will be recognized in any category.
*Including the 100 points needed to qualify for the Follmer Award.
Robert H. Reeves Biography
Robert H. Reeves worked with William G. Follmer from 1944 to 1946 in organizing the formation of the Association. He was a member of the organizing committee of AAHA in 1946 and chairman of the Association’s first nominating committee. In 1956, he assumed the presidency of AAHA. He served as associate editor of Hospital Accounting, now Healthcare Financial Management, from February 1950 to 1953, and edited the Question Box feature from September 1949 to 1954. In 1955, he chaired the bylaws committee which implemented recommendations of the AAHA Committee on Structure and Program. As President, he appointed the first board of examiners for the Fellowship examination in 1956.
Reeves also created an annual chapter competition with an award to be named after Graham L. Davis and obtained Davis’ permission to name the award after him. In addition, he conceived the William G. Follmer Merit Award and was the moving force behind its installation.
Reeves originated the resolution passed by Rochester, New York AAHA members petitioning the State Department of Social Welfare to adopt the AHA Accounting Handbook as a standard for annual reports. As an accounting consultant to a group of 35 hospitals, he advocated adoption by them of the AHA Chart of Accounts and assisted them in adapting their books and records to the Chart of Accounts.
In addition, he was a member of the New York State Hospital Accounting Committee in 1953 and chairman of the group in 1957. He persuaded the committee to recommend that the board of directors of the New York State Hospital Association pass a resolution urging all hospitals to have their books audited annually by independent public accountants.
Reeves also was a member of the committee that wrote the first correspondence course in hospital accounting published by Indiana University. In June, 1962, he was named honorary editor of the 15th anniversary issue of Hospital Accounting, (now Healthcare Financial Management).
Over the years, Reeves helped form a number of association chapters; served on the faculty of several Annual National Institutes; lectured and taught throughout the nation; and wrote many articles published in hospital publications. A Fellow, class of 1960, Reeves worked as a consultant in hospital accounting and financial management until his death in 1984.
